Decide which parts you actually need to change.
A web agency may handle design and content while other companies handle the domain, hosting and email. Start by listing those services before changing agency. Decide what should stay and what needs to change.
A new website can use the same domain. It can also keep existing page URLs even if the content or system changes. Google gives separate migration guidance for changing hosting with unchanged URLs and for moves that change URLs. Ask the new agency to explain which applies to your project.
Gather access details and read existing agreements.
Find out who can manage the website, domain, DNS and email. Check notice periods, separate subscriptions and what a handover includes. Paying for a website does not, by itself, establish which materials or technical parts can be handed over; check your agreement.
Ask for a list of what can be exported and reused: content, images, the database, page structure and other relevant parts. Explain what the new agency needs and agree how access will be transferred. Do not put passwords or authorisation codes in the shared worksheet.
- Who is the registered domain holder?
- Which accounts and administrators belong to the business?
- What can be exported, and in which format?
- Which agreements should stay, end or be replaced?
- Who is responsible for the handover, and what will it cost?
Keeping your domain and changing registrar are separate decisions.
You do not need to change domain registrar simply because another agency is building your website. If you keep your current registrar, check that you can manage the domain and the DNS settings needed for the project.
For a .se domain registrar transfer, the Swedish Internet Foundation explains that you need an authorisation code from your current registrar. The new registrar uses the code to make the transfer and confirms when it is complete. Ask your provider which term it uses; search results and interfaces may call it an auth code or EPP code. Follow the instructions for your particular domain extension.
Plan DNS and email separately.
Cloudflare’s documentation describes MX records as the information that routes email to a mail server. SPF, DKIM and DMARC have other roles in sender identification and authentication. Ask the responsible technician to document existing records and preserve or recreate the settings your email provider requires.
If you are only moving the website, your email service can remain in place provided its dependencies are handled. If you are also changing email provider, old messages, accounts, aliases and any other data need their own migration plan. Changing DNS does not copy mailbox contents. Test incoming and outgoing email, and check where website form submissions are sent.
Give each old URL a clear next destination.
List important existing pages and decide which URLs can stay. When a page moves permanently, Google recommends a server-side redirect such as 301 or 308. Ask the agency to record each old URL and its relevant new destination, then test that visitors arrive in the right place.
A migration or major change can affect Google rankings while it is processed. Redirects are part of the migration work, not a guarantee of unchanged traffic or rankings. Follow up search performance and contact routes after launch according to your agreed responsibilities.
Complete a handover worksheet for your business.
Copy the rows into a document and fill in what you know. Write unknown rather than assuming a service is included with the old agency. Identify the person responsible for each account and how access can be arranged, without recording the login details themselves.
Review the worksheet with the new agency before ordering. For each item that will change, add a responsible person, any cost and a way to check the result. This keeps the brief useful even when the website, domain and email have different providers.
- Current website and system: ____. Keep, migrate or rebuild: ____.
- Domain holder and registrar: ____. Access arranged by: ____.
- DNS provider: ____. Documented settings held by: ____.
- Email provider and affected addresses: ____. Keep or migrate email: ____.
- Materials and exports: ____. Missing items or items to replace: ____.
- Old URLs: ____. Plan for keeping them and setting redirects: ____.
- Affected agreements and planned termination: ____. Person responsible for checking before termination: ____.
- Website, form and email tests: ____. Follow-up after launch: ____.
Check the new delivery before closing the old service.
Google describes a hosting migration as preparation and testing, a DNS change, monitoring and then shutting down the old hosting once traffic is working on the new host. Agree who will monitor the move and when the old service can end. Contract terms also need to be handled.
Check the website on mobile, important URLs, contact forms and affected email functions. Agree what to do if anything needs to be restored. Each part needs a responsible person; a statement that the design is finished is not enough to verify a handover.
How we scope a move to Nolera.
Send your current website address and tell us which system you use. We will review what can be kept, migrated or rebuilt. Handover, redirects, the domain, DNS and any email migration must be scoped in writing around your existing setup; the website package does not automatically include all migration work.
Nolera’s website package costs €29/month excluding VAT for 1–5 information pages, with no setup fee or minimum commitment. The initial build and agreed delivery are covered by the package terms. Larger websites, integrations and custom features receive a separate quote. Domain and external service costs are disclosed before you order.
Frequently asked questions
Can we change web agency and keep our domain?
Changing agency does not, by itself, require a new domain. Check the domain holder, access, existing agreements and the technical changes your new website needs.
Where do we get the authorisation code for a .se domain?
Contact your current domain registrar or follow its control panel instructions. The Swedish Internet Foundation explains how the code is used for a registrar transfer. It is not a password for your website or email.
Should we cancel with our old agency straight away?
Check the agreement and plan the handover and termination with the providers involved. Make sure the website, email and access have a working continuation before shutting down services you still need.
Is the whole migration included in €29/month?
Not automatically. The package covers 1–5 information pages within an agreed scope. The existing system, materials, domain management and any email migration need to be assessed before scope and price are confirmed.
